Much like Vivianna Torun’s work, your designs are both timeless and entirely of the moment. How do you accomplish this?
I have always started each collection with a base palette of ivory and black. I believe it should be the start of any good wardrobe, easy to mix and match, then add a highlight of colour or print. I believe woman want to look confident and glamourous without having to be concerned about what they are wearing.
What does it mean to you to be an ‘Icon of Design’?
This is not something I think about or set out to achieve. I always strive to design for women who have occasions to attend whether that be for work or social. Many women have told me that my designs have been perfect for iconic moments in their life.
Describe your design ritual and ethos.
Each season I am inspired first by the fabrics – I work in a sunlight filled room and I look at how each fabric will drape on the body to create a design that my customers will want to add to their wardrobe.
After 52 years in the industry, what is your secret to remaining at the forefront of the design industry?
Listening to your customers and then encouraging them try something a little different. It is also important to be aware of changes in the economy and society that will reflect what a woman needs.
What is your formula for creating the perfect outfit?
There are three outfits I feel a women should own – a jacket and pant suit, a jumpsuit and a classic chemise – these three outfits can be worn for just about any occasion. Then add one statement piece of jewellery from Georg Jensen.
You have been a long-time wearer of Vivianna pieces, what do these designs add to your clothing?
I have always appreciated strong statement jewellery to compliment my designs. My Vivianna watch has been a constant companion for years – a true statement in function and form.
