Lone Løvschal

Master of Guild, Kjøbenhavns Guldsmedelaug

Occupation

Silversmith, designer MA (Royal College of Art, London) and Master of Guild for Københavns Guldsmedelaug.

How do you/have you worked with jewellery?

I mainly design and make unique pieces of jewellery and often with a focus on the person who will be wearing it and the emotional values that the jewellery represents.

What is a beautiful piece of jewellery to you?

To me, a beautiful piece of jewellery is harmonious and has a great story behind it.

What is your favourite Georg Jensen jewellery?

It's hard to pick one specific piece of jewellery but I'm particularly fond of Torun's work. Her unconventional way of using stones and the way she challenges her craft by playing with the body and materials is very impressive.

What influence has Her Majesty the Queen had on Danish jewellery design?

Her Majesty is an excellent ambassador for Danish jewellery design because she wears her jewellery at every opportunity, and she is good at using many different pieces.

What skills should a talented jewellery designer have?

There's no set formula, but to me, an in-depth knowledge of materials and production methods is important. Also, a solid understanding of the jewellery as an identity-creating object and of the jewellery's emotional value.

What are you most hoping to see in this competition?

I hope to see a thoroughly prepared piece of jewellery that is based on the theme and which we can all wear, and then I hope, of course, that it simply oozes craftsmanship, tradition and innovation.

What advice would you give to the competition entrants?

Be playful, curious and allow plenty of time to immerse yourself in the work.
