Jewellery care instructions

With appropriate care and handling, your jewellery will retain its beauty and last a lifetime. To ensure the longevity of your jewellery pieces, we recommend the following actions:

• Take a regular activities into account when choosing your jewellery. Avoid wearing them on the beach, at the swimming pool, or to play sport to avert knocks and scratches. Wearing your jewellery should also be avoided when doing housework or gardening
• Ensure that you remove your jewellery before bed, when showering or when washing your hands
• Avoid letting your jewellery be exposed to cosmetics, hairspray, or perfume. Always put on your beautiful jewellery pieces as a final touch, after applying make-up and styling hair
• Take care to protect jewellery from impact against hard and abrasive surfaces. Even a diamond can chip if hit with enough force or at just the right angle.
• Examine your jewellery pieces for loose settings, clasps and joining before wear
• It is advised to have the setting of diamonds checked by a professional jewellery once a year – especially on rings.
• Jewellery items can become scratched when they come into contact with one another. We recommend jewellery be stored individually in the Georg Jensen box that you were given at the time of purchase or another suitably lined box or pouch.

 

STERLING SILVER

Sterling silver will tarnish over time, and should be polished occasionally with a soft impregnated polishing cloth. Do not use silver dip polish to clean your jewellery as it may give an immediate and shiny effect, but will also corrode the surface, making it tarnish faster and over time ruin the jewellery.

Silver jewellery that is regularly used typically needs less care, so we encourage you to wear and enjoy your silver jewellery every day.

An oxidised finish is used for some of our jewellery pieces. This finish is the deliberate blackening of crevices in the ornamentation to make the decorative details stand out more clearly. The finish can be removed by overzealous cleaning and polishing.

 

GOLD AND PLATINUM

Gold and platinum jewellery should be polished with a soft piece of wash leather.

All Georg Jensen white gold jewellery is rhodium plated to make the white gold alloy white. The rhodium coating will wear off at some point – how long it take will vary from piece to piece and from person to person, depending on how and how often the jewellery is worn. The rhodium coating can be renewed.

DIAMONDS

Diamonds have a strong affinity for grease and oils, and the effect of dirt on a diamond’s overall appearance can be lacklustre. Diamonds can be cleaned using a soft toothbrush and warm soapy water followed by a good rinse in hot water, before wiped with a soft cloth. 

 

GEMSTONES

The stones should be cleaned with lukewarm soapy water and gentle brushing, before wiped with a soft cloth.

 

PEARLS

Pearls are best cleaned with a soft damp cloth.

Caring for your watch

Advice on steps you can take to ensure your watch remains in peak condition

Water :

• 3 and 5 ATM rated watches: although water resistant, they should not be submerged unnecessarily. If your watch does get wet, pat dry with a soft cloth.
• 10 & 20 ATM rated watches: these can be submerged provided the crowns are securely closed.
• Before submerging your watch always ensure the crown is firmly pushed or screwed into place.
• After being submerged in salt or chlorinated water, your watch should be rinsed with warm fresh water and then patted dry.
• Crowns and chronograph pushers should never be operated underwater.

Magnetism :

• Avoid close contact with objects that emit strong magnetic fields, such as x-ray machines, smartphones, refrigerators, hi-fi speaker etc…

Temperature Changes :

• Avoid exposing your watch to extremes of temperature (greater than 60 ˚C / 1 4 0 ˚ F and less than 0 ˚C /32 ˚ F). Al so try to avoid sudden. temperature changes.

Shocks :

• Avoid extreme impacts or shocks to the watch as these may damage the movement, crystal or case.
• Your watch should not be dropped and you should consider removing it before playing certain sports like golf and tennis.

Cleaning:

• Keep your watch clean and free from dust, grime etc…
• Watch cases can be cleaned with a soft cloth dipped in soapy water, while bracelets can be cleaned with a soft brush. Your watch should be patted dry with a soft cloth and finally polished with a lint-free polishing cloth to work up a shine.
• Leather straps can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, or brushed with a soft brush.

Chemicals :

• Avoid contact with chemical substances such as perfumes, solvents, detergents, chlorinated pool water and cosmetics as they can damage gaskets and erode the metals.

Leather Straps:

• Avoiding contact with greasy substances such as cosmetics, solvents and detergents as they may be absorbed by the leather.
• Avoid contact with water or high humidity environments as this may discolour and prematurely age the strap.
• Avoid high heat sources, as well prolonged exposure to sunlight.
