Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, known as Torun, was a pioneering Swedish silversmith born on 4 December 1927 in Malmö, Sweden. She is celebrated as the world’s first globally recognised female silversmith and a trailblazer in modern jewellery design.
Torun’s journey into silversmithing began at an early age, influenced by her artistic mother and architect father. She pursued formal training at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, where she honed her craft and developed her distinctive style.
Her work is renowned for its simplicity, elegance and organic forms, often incorporating sterling silver and precious stones. Rejecting ornamentation, she embraced minimalism, focusing on the natural beauty of materials and the harmony of design. Her philosophy was that jewellery should complement the wearer, not overshadow them.
This approach earned her international acclaim and collaborations with prominent figures including Pablo Picasso and Duke Ellington. In 1956, Torun moved to France, where she continued to innovate and inspire. Her creations, such as the distinctive bangle watch for Georg Jensen, remain enduring symbols of her visionary artistry.
Torun died on 3 July 2004, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to influence contemporary jewellery design.
