The sense of humour in Allan Scharff’s design comes through in the exaggerated movement of the forms. Arcs and curves which are characteristics of Henning Koppel’s pitchers have here been elongated to form long lines. The artist has striven to capture the aerodynamic physiognomy of birds. In Scharff’s work studies of nature are focused on the simple details that make us recognise a form and understand its functions. The Pitcher “Ibis” is made from two flat pieces of silver and goes through the same process as the Pitcher 992 which means that it is raised by hand by the same technique as the Covered Dish 1026, heating the silver often to ensure that it stays soft and flexible.

The challenge with the “Ibis” pitcher is that the two halves are NOT identical and this makes the long process of raising the silver even longer. The silversmith must all the time be aware of this difference when he is raising the two sides and measuring against templates to ensure that the form and shape is just perfect and especially to make sure that the edges of the two halves will eventually meet. When the two halves have the right shape the silversmith works on the surface with different kinds of hammers to mooth the surface. To ensure a perfect fit of the edges the two halves are given a final press in two different forms! – again, because the two halves are not identical. Thereafter, the edges are grinded and carefully prepared for a perfect fit and the two halves are carefully soldered together. The bottom is then soldered in and the pitcher is handed to the polisher for the grinding and polishing process. It is a large pitcher to handle and the polishing lines must run around the body – not from top to bottom – and at the end the surface must have a uniform smooth finish.

At first glance, Allan Scharff ’s simple pieces could not be more different from the romantic, arts and craft style of Georg Jensen. However, they both spring from the same source, nature. Georg Jensen always claimed that nature was his greatest inspiration. The same is true for Scharff.
