Søren Ulrik Petersen graduated as furniture designer in 1990 from The School of Applied Arts afterhaving finished his apprenticeship as a carpenter. For some years he worked as a designer for Ilva, a member of the Furniture Group, and as design partner at Linde, Hagerup and Petersen. In addition he has always had his own studio, SUP Design, to which he now gives all his time. As well as the work for Georg Jensen, Søren Ulrik Petersen solves problems for Tuborg, Copenhagen Council, PP Furniture, Danish Crafts and others.

Since 1993 he has participated in many exhibitions throughout the world, including Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Cologne and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has also received many international prizes for his work. In 2000 Søren Ulrik Petersen got a 3-year working grant from the Arts Council.

The key words in Søren Ulrik Petersen’s successful work as a designer are: function and togetherness. “Of course, what one makes should function. But it has to do more than that. Togetherness is an important word in my work because we are all placed on this earth to be together. To give and to receive. That is why there is a social aspect to most of my work. The aim is to convey the wonderful, the humorous and the surprising”, explains Søren Ulrik Petersen.

He often tries to imagine how a blind person would react to his designs. “Design must never be totally stiff and square, because then a blind person would get no pleasure from handling the object. Rounded shapes are friendlier – they spread a happiness we all need in our everyday lives. Therefore, it is also important to me that the design appears simple and elegant”.
